This Question not asked about Lee Chong Wei

Pic: Lee's parents watching the Badminton Finals at home.

I believe at least a few million Malaysians watched the Gold Medal Badminton match yesterday and was gutted by the lost. Many questions were asked about what happened to Lee Chong Wei and why he buckled under pressure etc.

My question is why on earth is his parents watching their son from their home in Cheras!?

Being the first Malaysian to qualify for the Olympic's men's singles final is already a significant achievement. It puzzles me why our government did not sponsor his parents to cheer him on?

Our Olympic Council probably paid lots of money to send "officials" (it is known that some people take this trips as paid holidays) to Beijing why can't they spend a bit more to send his parents there since it is the first time a Malaysian actually reached the final of this event?

Malaysia is rich enough to send a space tourist cum astronaut but can't give his parents this honour of watching their son?

Its an utter shame that his parents are watching at home accompanied by scores of reporters.

The thing is, one suspects if Lee was not a Lee but born into a different race, this question will not ever be raised.

What do you think?

Maybe the IOC should sponsor all of the athletes' parents to Beijing?

How nice of you to highlight some racial issue.

Brush up on your grammer.

I agree it would be rather wasteful to send all parents to Beijing. However one would need to recognise that it is the first time a Malaysian got to the finals. A reasonable person would see that.

As for Mr/Ms Anon,
Thanks for your advice. Although one should realise that the blogpost was written not to pass an English test.
.. I hope u do not lack objectivity as you are of courage.

Hi Anonymous,

Grammar is spelled with 'a', not 'e'. Brush up your spelling.

Dude, please don't make it racial.

During Rashid Sidek (Olympic 1996Atlanta), nobody sponsor his parents to come also.

Josh,

I quote: "However one would need to recognise that it is the first time a Malaysian got to the finals. A reasonable person would see that."

The first time Malaysian which made it to the final round was in 1996.

Please don't play around with Racial issues but sending his parents for the finals should have been considered.

Thanks for all the comments!
Obviously I am not playing up "racial issues", but just pointing out what many consider as obvious bias of the government. Consider scholarships awards, consider university entrance. Those are clear enough for many to note that it exist.

That said, we all dont like being a racist! Which is great!

Unfortunately, the reality is that such situation does raises those questions.

On the Sidek brothers being in the final. That is another matter, as the post is about the first olympic singles final, not first olympic final. That said, the Sidek parents should be there at the finals in Atlanta if they werent there themselves.

We should be proud of Lee, and the sacrifices he made for the glory of country - even if he failed that the very last bid to get Gold.

And many were not happy that the parents werent there to cheer him and that raised the question.

Oh cmon.

Why should the govt sponsor the lee when the sideks (as well as the tan kim hock and cheah soon kit) were not sponsored?

the 1996 final was the FIRST ever final for Malaysia for ANY game. What made you think the 2008 is any greater than 1996?

If you are not biased, 1996 and 2008 should be of equal importance.

There's obviously no bias since the govt didn't sponsor the teams' parents that made it in 1996 too.

The one that made this into a racial thing is you.

Any yes, you can choose not to publish this comment, like the other comments which you censored.

Hi Arni,
Apparently "someone" did sponsor the Sidek parents to Atlanta! So surprise surprise!
