If you didn’t yet know, Apple has revealed the iPhone 3G S, the S stands for Speed. It is now faster, cheaper and you finally get a better battery.
That said, should any of us who are using the jailbroken iPhone 2G or 3G ditch our old girlfriend for this new sexy model?
Improved Battery life: Apple claims that the iPhone 3G S will get 9 hours of web surfing now when on WiFi — that’s up from 6 hours on the current iPhone. 3G talk time will be the same 5 hours now though. If you are frustrated with your current girlfriend who can only give you juice for 5 hours it’s not the end of the world. There is a much cheaper option available than to ditch her. Pay RM75 and get a Lenmar Portable Charger. It will give you another 5 hours of use while charging. That is if you don’t mind some dangling wires.
3 Megapixel Camera: Although it is great to finally have a 3Megapixel Camera with Video on the 3GS, it’s just 1Mega pixel! Although it has the added autofocus function, it’s not much of a difference in reality to a 2Megapixel camera. Besides, with editing app like SP Photo Fix on the iPhone, some of the picture quality can be improved with a few touches.
Video recording: The iPhone 3GS camera also supports video recording. However, those of us using Jailbroken iPhones have been recording videos on Cycorder for a long time!
Voice memos: Although the 3G S is equipped with voice memo app, jailbroken iPhones users can use AudioMemo Pro. Again nothing new.
Landscape keyboard: Again, another feature that already is present in Jailbroken iPhones.
Cut, copy, and paste messages. I hope this means we can forward SMS. However, if you have iRealSMS app in Cydia, your old girlfriend already can forward SMS. But if you need to cut and paste a lot, there is an app called ShapeWriter Pro that can do the same.
What your current girlfriend can’t do:
- Spotlight search: As far as I know, nothing currently available in Cydia.
- Voice Control: You can say things like “Call Bob” — if there were is more than one entry it will ask which one you want. You can also say “play Oasis” or any other movie/audio you want to play. You can also ask “What’s playing now” or say “Play more songs like this” and a genius playlist will be created.
- Compass: The digital Compass app shows your orientation, integration with Maps — if you double click the map reorientates itself.
With Maxis, the cost of ownership for a iPhone 3G is around RM3,000 without the plan (on Hotlink). So don’t get caught by the USD199 and USD299 gimmick, the new iPhones will cost around RM2,500-RM3,000 if Maxis slash their iPhone 3G down.
Those who just bought the iPhone3G from Maxis and are bound by their 1 year or 2 year plan like my Bro-in-law will now be crying foul! Hahaha....

Hi Josh, I have a few things to point out.
1. 3g calling aside (and few people run their battery down due to calls) the battery has seen a reasonable improvement. Nobody wants to carry around an extra battery pack
2. Video recording will be WAY better than Cycorder or videorecorder3g. It is 640x480 and 30fps, instead of a somewhat unreliable 320x240 at 15fps. There is also video editing
3. Older iphones will be updated with voice memos, this is not a hardware change. The apple audio recording app is better because it can run in the background just like a phone call.
4. Jailbreaking an iphone doesn't give you email, texting or notes in landscape unless you buy an extra app that decreases the stability of the iphone by consuming important runtime memory (RAM, which has been double in the 3G s)
5. Copy/Paste will be added to all iphones that update software, but the 3G and the 3G S will be the only ones capable of MMS without jailbreaking (wtf apple!?!)
6. Spotlight search is for all iphones, I don't know about voice control.
7. The processor on the 3G S is "significantly faster" with app to double the speed of the old one. This is HUGE (at least for me). This means that launching apps, rendering pages in Safari and gaming will see major improvements.
I'm not attacking your post, and I'm not fanboi (apple sucks IMHO), just my 2 cents.

Thanks Ben for your views.. Good points. no, it was more than 2 sens for sure..
1. The Batter pack i am referring to is a mobile one weighs less than 100g. SHould be no problem carrying as some people carry even two phones!
2. Yes, 30fps is definitely an improvement.. but would it justify the increased cost? Hmmm...
3. Yes, its neat to record my conversations but Audio Memo can do that too..
4. True, but it beats spending an extra 2K plus for a simple feature, dont u think? Keyboard in Landscape is Free on JB.
5. Cut/Paste/Copy can be found in JB iphones for free. It's found in Clippy!
6. JB iphones can use Global Search too. Free!
7. For sure Speed is what one pays for. But is that worth say another RM3K for? Hmmm...
I think those of us with JB iPhone 2Gs are happy with a Jailbreak ones unless we want more Speed.
