If sharks can do it, why can't God?

This has to be a contender for the headline of the year.

Virgin shark got pregnant in Virginia aquarium

Scientists using DNA testing have confirmed the second-known instance of "virgin birth" in a shark -- a female Atlantic blacktip shark named Tidbit that produced a baby without a male shark.

The shark came to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Centre in Virginia Beach not long after being born in the wild and lived there for eight years with no males of the same species, said Beth Firchau, the aquarium's curator of fishes.

The 5-foot (1.5-metre) shark died after being removed from the tank for a veterinary examination, and a subsequent necropsy revealed that Tidbit was carrying a fully developed shark pup nearly ready to be born, Firchau said.

Demian Chapman, a shark scientist with the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University in New York state, performed DNA testing that showed the pup had no father. Virgin birth such as this is known as parthenogenesis.

A year ago, Chapman used genetic testing to confirm that a hammerhead shark at a zoo in Omaha gave birth to a pup in 2002, also after parthenogenesis.

"It tells us that the original case we documented last year was not some fluke of nature. This is something that might be more common than we think it is, and widespread among sharks," Chapman said in a telephone interview.

Parthenogenesis also has been documented in Komodo dragons, snakes, birds, fish and amphibians, Chapman said. It occurs when a baby is conceived without male sperm fertilizing the female's eggs. In the type of parthenogenesis seen in sharks, the mother's chromosomes split during egg development.

How the sharks do it is unclear. Chapman said they may use a hormone to trigger eggs to develop in this manner in the absence of males. Or perhaps if eggs remain unfertilized with no males around, a certain fraction develop into embryos.

"It's a finding that kind of rewrites the textbooks a little," Chapman said. "It just goes to show how the ocean keeps its secrets very well. And the sharks in particular."

"Of course, sharks are being killed at such a rate that unless we do something to stop that, we're not even going to learn all their secrets before they're gone," Chapman added.

The findings appear in the Journal of Fish Biology.

So, you call it parthenogenesis; I just call it Virgin Birth. Hello?

Japanese Banking Crisis

Following the problems in the sub-prime lending market in America and the run on Northern Rock in the UK, uncertainty has now hit Japan.

In the last 7 days Origami Bank has folded, Sumo Bank has gone belly up and Bonsai Bank announced plans to cut some of its branches.

Yesterday, it was announced that Karaoke Bank is up for sale and will likely go for a song, while today shares in Kamikaze Bank were suspended after they nose-dived.

While Samurai Bank fell on its sword, Ninja Bank is reported to have taken a hit, but they remain in the black.

Furthermore, 500 staff at Karate Bank got the chop and analysts report that there is something fishy going on at Sushi Bank where it is feared that staff may get a raw deal.

Even Miso Bank is in the soup, and an audit of the Tofu Bank is turning up questions about it's REAL assets.

The only ray of light in all this is the arrival of a new bank rising out of the ashes of the others. Its name - Hiroshima Savings - and their slogan - "we've survived worse than this!".

Its merger with the Teppanyaki Bank is still hot and on the table.

The Plastic Coding System

It is a fallacy that many believe if the plastic number is higher it is a better plastic. The different number code indicates the different uses for each type of plastic.

So if you want to carry water, PET 1 or PVC 3 should be good enough.

Altering Food Recipe is the new trend

I am sure you are all fed up, pent up and utterly disgusted with the China's Baby Milk fiasco. That has lead to many boycotting anything from China locally and companies producing and using milk products have suffered lost of sales.

The reality is China's Baby Milk fiasco is only a black spot of a more widespread trend.

Major food makers have been quietly altering the recipes for their products. For candy, dairy products, and a variety of other food products, fillers have been added and cheaper ingredients are being used as substitutes in order to cut costs.

Hershey's, as one example, is using vegetable oil for a portion of the cocoa butter traditionally used in some of its chocolates, a move which has led to some complaints.Spice maker McCormick & Co. is now supplying food companies with cheaper spices. They are providing Mexican oregano instead of the pricier Mediterranean variety, and garlic concentrate instead of garlic cloves, which are heavier and costlier to ship. (Sources: Wall Street Journal August 26, 2008)

Locally, Nestle has replaced dairy milk as a base of their popular Milo many years ago with palm oil. So the Milo that you grew up loving is now one that leave an oily aftertaste. The retail price went up but the quality isn't the same!

So i suggest one take a closer look at the quality of materials in the products you have been buying, rather than just checking to see if it is Made in China.

Why did the Chicken cross the road?

BARACK OBAMA
The chicken crossed the road because it was time for a CHANGE! The chicken wanted CHANGE!

JOHN MCCAIN:
My friends, that chicken crossed the road because it recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road.

HILLARY CLINTON:
When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure -- right from Day One! -- that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't about me.......

GEORGE W. BUSH:
We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road or not. The chicken is either against us, or for us. There is no middle ground here.

JOHN LENNON:
Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing the road together, in peace.

BILL GATES:
I have just released eChicken2008, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your check book. Internet Explorer is an integral part of the Chicken. This new platform is much more stable and will never cra...#@&&^(C% ........ reboot.

BILL CLINTON:
I did not cross the road with THAT chicken. What is your definition of chicken?

AL GORE:
Chicken shall not shit while crossing the road. This is for a green environment.

LEE KUAN YEW:
We have installed crossing lights at all traffic junctions. All chickens should follow instructions while crossing the road.

SAMY VELLU:
Gantry points have been set up. All chickens wanting to cross the road are advised to top up their cash cards first.

NAJIB RAZAK:
What chickens? I don't know any chickens... especially those from Mongolia.

ABDULLAH BADAWI:
We have to be fair to all chickens. Some want to cross over the road, some do not. ........ Zzzzzz .......zzzzzz ....... Now what were we talking about? Ah yes, chickens. We will form a Royal Commission to decide whether it is right for them to cross the road.

MAHATHIR:
Now even non-bumi chickens want to cross the road! How can they disrespect and disregard apa nama bumi chickens? We must be allowed to cross over first. It is our special privilege and no one can challenge that!

ANWAR:
We have enough chickens waiting to cross over in September.

The Racist Rant

Video of the statements by the Racist Member of Parliament.

This video blatantly shows how recalcitrant the man is. The good thing is the majority of us aren't like this. But unfortunately, this is exactly the kind of propaganda that Umno and Biro TataNegara has been preaching for more than 20 years!

Is it surprising that this ugly head is now turning up in numbers?

Yes, we don't have to react to these folks as we Malaysians have already moved beyond race politics! And yes, he might be baiting some of us to react - and some political parties have already bitten the bait!

It is funny that a Professor from USM is calling this a form of mutated Mad Cow disease renamed as "Mamak Disease."

Hands to Heaven

Today – 26th August 2008 – is another Day of Destiny for Malaysia. The decision of 58,000 voters will determine the destiny of 26 million Malaysians.

How apt that that the meaning of “Permatang” in Malay as “divider”, would divide the history of Malaysia. A victory by Anwar would certainly rewrite the history of this nation.

Yes, history is always written by the victor. Lets hope & pray as the elderly lady above, that we banish the corrupt, illegitimate, and fascist ruling coalition to the annals of our dark history and rewrite a new chapter of history and celebrate our patriots.

Hell Call

How much would it cost to (telephone) call Malaysia from Hell? You'd be surprised!

Queen Elizabeth, Bill Clinton and Ahmad Badawi die and go to hell. But the devil has only one phone there. Queen says, I miss my England , can I use your phone and hear how my people are doing down there.

She calls and talks about five minutes. Then she asks: Well devil, how much do I owe you for the call? The devil says: Five million pounds. She writes him a cheque and goes back to her chair .

Clinton wants to make a call too. He says I wanna call the US . He talks about ten minutes, then asks how much do I owe you devil? The devil says Ten million dollars He also writes a cheque and goes back to his seat.

Badawi is jealous. He says I want to call Malaysia . He calls and talks for about an hour to his son-in-law who is busy trying to find Mr.Petronas. Then he asks the devil how much do I owe you? The devil replies: only one dollar. Badawi is shocked and asks 'why so little?'.

The devils says: if you make a call from one hell to another, IT'S LOCAL CALL.

Avril Flip Flop

IT SEEMS THAT AVRIL is not TOO SEXY, after all for Malaysia.

MalaysianInsider reports: "The authorities have reversed their decision to cancel a concert by Canadian pop-rock star Avril Lavigne, saying today that she can perform next week despite complaints her act is “too sexy”.The ministry’s secretary-general, Muzahet Masruri, said today that authorities decided after talks with the concert organisers that Lavigne “can do the show” next week, even though the government would still have preferred a different date.Muzahet declined to give a specific reason for the decision, but he said organisers told the government that they had already sold thousands of tickets and that the cancellation could hurt tourism."

My guess is - the Minister's daughter or the SG's daughter scolded their daddies for the dumb decision since everyone know Avril ain't too sexy even for Canada!

In the mean time everyone in the world - is having a laugh at us because our government is THAT stupidoto.

Ismail - the Last Days Musical

This musical production is loosely based on the final years of Tun Dr Ismail the deputy to Tun Razak and is performed at KL Pac until the 2nd September. The life of Doc Ismail (as he is referred to in the past by his mates) is documented in a book "The Reluctant Politician")

I went to watch this production because I think Doc's life and his passion is someone that all Malaysians should know and learn from. His non-ethnic approach to politics is what we need today as well.

Quote from Wikipedia: Ismail was particularly known for his non-ethnic approach to political issues. Expressing concern over racial polarisation in the country, he once asked:

Why did we fight for Merdeka? So that the different races can be divided? That can't be the way, right? That can't be why all these great Malay and Umno leaders fought for this ... Something is wrong...

I hope the new discussions will start. Why are we building Malaysia? What Malaysia are we building? What kind of symbol is Malaysia supposed to be?

After watching the performance, I have to say that I wish that it had a bit more drama and story and less singing! So what if its a musical, it can't be all singing. Definitely not repetitive singing!

Some plus points however can be found - the lead actor Malik Taufik was for me the saving grace. He sang well, spoke clearly and was the more polish of actors. The other cast were average and bordering on amateurish at times - what do one expect as a few were in fact part time actors!

Some songs were interesting but most of them were rather sedate. I loved the selection of Malay songs. At some point, the singing becomes irrelevant and self-indulgent. The song by Doc's Aussie girlfriend near the end was totally irrelevant and poorly delivered.

The poems were good but suffered for poor rendition.

The story wasn't fully developed as one would have loved. Given that its a musical perhaps that was an impediment. However, if the songs were short and sharp, there would have been more time for a bit more bite on a few potential dramatic moments.

The addition of a villain or two in this story would have added a new dimension not explored in this musical.

There was a lack of clarity in the conflict that play out between Tun Razak & Doc, leaving the uninformed rather confuse as to why they disagree in the first place.

No one cried, few laughed, no one got angry. In fact a few yawned. In fact, a few orchestra members actually looked bored!

It is just unfortunate that a great hero like Tun Dr Ismail story was not given its due dramatic treatment.

His perspective on Malaysian politics and nation building is truly what we need to hear at such a time as this.

All in all a 7/10 for a local act. Under broadway standards, it would score rather poorly.

Money Talks

My pal pointed this out to me -
What was Chong Wei doing in a BN Campaign?
Didn't he know he is being used by BN?
BN paying for his RM300,000 reward mah! And his pension!

True true, but what if the BN government falls after Sept 16? Who is the government then?

But credit to the champ, he said this (reported by Malaysianinsider)-
“I am here just to collect the cheque. They have already announced that I would receive the reward. I don’t want to comment anything on politics. I don’t know much about it,” said Chong Wei, who is not a registered voter.

Dont get me wrong, I like this champ. It is just opportunistic of BN to use him for political mileage. Credit to him that he said - he just came for the cheque!

What my pals and I are cheesed about is - what Ismail Sabri claim that Chong Wei's success shows that Chinese are not discriminated."Our sports programme is for all Malaysians".

Yeah, it is something needless to say! Malaysians of all race (although RPK claims 90% of taxes are paid by non-bumis) pay their taxes so why shouldn't it be the case!

That said, I can't wait to hear Ismail Sabri or whoever in BN to say "Our Higher Education is for all Malaysians".. especially to UiTM?

I am Too Sexy for Malaysia

In case you didn't know Avril will not be in Malaysia and you can blame that on our Islamic Government.

Read AP news here.

"The Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry said it had decided not to permit Lavigne's show because it was unsuitable to Malaysian culture and could not be held on Aug. 29, two days ahead of independence day."
I suppose what is suitable for Malaysian culture is exposing "sodomy" on national media for kids to learn about it?

"Malaysia requires all performers to wear clothes without obscene or drug-related images and be covered from the chest to the knees. They must also refrain from jumping, shouting, hugging and kissing on stage" claims the report.

So I suppose our local rock bands - don't jump, don't shout on stage? No wonder the local bands are not popular!

"We don't want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance. We want clean artists, artists that are good role models," he said.
Yeah, we not only want clean artists on stage, more importantly we also want clean politicians in the parliament.

Yeah, you politicians better be good role model if you insist the artists to be one! Funny how our politicians tend to forget about their own responsibilities, yeah?

By the same reasoning, since they are now baning artists who are not good role models for our kids, they should also ban football on TV because players like Ronaldo and Rooney are really bad role models for sleeping with hookers, using foul language, and for unsporting behavior on the field etc.

Why dont cha ban the Premier League too!?

This Question not asked about Lee Chong Wei

Pic: Lee's parents watching the Badminton Finals at home.

I believe at least a few million Malaysians watched the Gold Medal Badminton match yesterday and was gutted by the lost. Many questions were asked about what happened to Lee Chong Wei and why he buckled under pressure etc.

My question is why on earth is his parents watching their son from their home in Cheras!?

Being the first Malaysian to qualify for the Olympic's men's singles final is already a significant achievement. It puzzles me why our government did not sponsor his parents to cheer him on?

Our Olympic Council probably paid lots of money to send "officials" (it is known that some people take this trips as paid holidays) to Beijing why can't they spend a bit more to send his parents there since it is the first time a Malaysian actually reached the final of this event?

Malaysia is rich enough to send a space tourist cum astronaut but can't give his parents this honour of watching their son?

Its an utter shame that his parents are watching at home accompanied by scores of reporters.

The thing is, one suspects if Lee was not a Lee but born into a different race, this question will not ever be raised.

What do you think?

About Sex, Advertising, Mind Control & Psychology

In this age of consumerism, we are constantly bombarded by advertising messages that wants us to believe that having more is better, or having what you want is the same as having what you need. And of course, buying certain products will get you what you emotionally desire.

Although this video does states the obvious, it is well presented and provides useful truths for the uninitiated to avoid the snare of modern advertising.

Hand in Hand

From an email:
"When I was in China last month, I saw a Chinese modern dance competition on TV. One very unique couple won one of the top prizes. The lady, in her 30's, was a dancer who had trained since she was a little girl. Later in life, she lost her entire left arm in an accident and fell into a state of depression for a few years. Someone then asked her to coach a children's dancing group. From that point on, she realized that she could not forget dancing. She still loved to dance and wanted to dance again. So, she started to do some of her old routines, but, having lost her arm, she had also lost her balance. It took a while before she could even make simple turns and spins without falling.

Then she heard of a man in his 20s who had lost a leg in an accident. He had also fallen into the usual denial, depression and angry type of emotional roller coaster. She was determined to find him (apparently he was from a different Province) and persuaded him to dance with her. He had never danced, and to 'dance with one leg...are you joking with me? No way!' But, she didn't give up, and he reluctantly agreed thinking, 'I have nothing else to do anyway.'

She started to teach him dancing 101. The two broke up a few times because he had no concept of using muscles, of how to control his body, and knew none of the basic things about dancing. When she became frustrated and lost patience with him, he would walk out. Eventually, they came back together and started training seriously. They hired a choreographer to design routines for them. She would fly high (held by him) with both arms (a sleeve for an arm) flying in the air. He could bend horizontally supported by one leg with her leaning on him, etc. In the competition, as you will see, they dance beautifully and they legitimately won the competition. It's ingenious how they incorporate the crutch into the routine!

This is the most magnificent and touching performance I have ever seen. It is living proof that the strong human spirit can conquer tremendous physical limitations!"

New Terengganu MB is a genius

You all heard the fiasco with the purchase of the Mercs in the Oil Rich State. All the story and song about how unreliable the Proton Perdana were and how often they breakdown. We also hear the public laments about this kind of spending in challenging times.

At the center of this trial by the media is the current MB Datuk Ahmad Said, who if you remember was not UMNO's favourite MB. The MSM continue to lynch him with this bad choice and how it is against government policy etc. I looks as if Ahmad is doomed.

Is he?

What I find interesting is how clever this Ahmad Said is.

Just think, the MB didn't buy the Merc for himself. He is using his 18 year old Merc as his official car. But it was ordered for the excos, who if you remember sometime ago.. were hostile to his appointment by the Agung.

Yes, people can complain about the unjustifiable orders and the unfair claims about the unreliable Perdana. But at the end of the day, Datuk Ahmad Said didn't approve the car for his own enjoyment. However, don't you think it would be a nice 'gesture' to once hostile the excos?

Meanwhile, the logic of this purchase was how expensive the previous maintenance costs of the Perdana were. What is interesting is this fact:

"Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said a total of RM1.15 million have been spent on maintaining the state’s 16 car fleet since they were purchased in 2004. This figure includes the repair costs of RM175,229.97 and RM132,357.76 for two of the cars that was revealed earlier this week. In addition, former MB Idris Jusoh’s car incurred a cost of RM131,600 in the first two months alone this year during the period he was the MB before he was replaced after the elections by Datuk Ahmad Said."
Wow, can we see who he is actually gunning down with this fiasco?
RM 131k in 2 months? Cheh Cheh.. ACA should check this out right?
Also, the RM1.15 million was spent during the previous MB's administration right?

So, with this masterstroke, he not only "buy over" the hostile excos, Datuk Ahmad also get to pin the whole blame on the former MB.

Who is the real daddy?

Tomato Story

A Jobless man applied for the position of 'office boy' at Microsoft.

The HR manager interviewed him then watched him cleaning the floor as a test.

' You are employed ' he said. Give me your e-mail address and I ' ll send you the application to fill in, as well as date when you may start.

The man replied ' But I don ' t have a computer, neither an email ' .

' I' m sorry', said the HR manager. If you don ' t have an email, that means you do not exist. And who doesn't exist, cannot have the job. '

The man left with no hope at all. He didn ' t know what to do, with only $10 in his pocket. He then decided to go to the supermarket and buy a 10Kg tomato crate.

He then sold the tomatoes in a door to door round.. In less than two hours, he succeeded to double his capital. He repeated the operation three times, and returned home with $60.

The man realized that he can survive by this way, and started to go everyday earlier, and return late. Thus, his money doubled or tripled everyday. Shortly, he bought a cart, then a truck, and then he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles.

5 years later, the man is one of the biggest food retailers in the US. He started to plan his family ' s future, and decided to have a life insurance.

He called an insurance broker, and chose a protection plan. When the conversation was concluded the broker asked him his email.

The man replied, ' I don't have an email.'

The broker answered curiously, 'You don't have an email, and yet have succeeded to build an empire. Can you imagine what you could have been if you had an e mail?!!'

The man thought for a while and replied, 'Yes, I'd be an office boy at Microsoft!'

Moral of the story
Moral 1 - Internet is not the solution to your life.
Moral 2 - If you don ' t have Internet, and work hard, you can be a millionaire.

Not Your Average Super Hero

There are heroes… there are superheroes… and then there’s Hancock.

That's the catchy line of this movie. I caught the trailer of this movie while watching KungFu Panda 2 weeks ago and the movie really caught my eye. With so many superhero movies coming out these days (Iron Man, Hulk, Dark Night etc), here's one that is an un-hero. Not your typical goody superhero.

The role of Hancock is played by Will Smith, someone who had plenty of experience in edgy and funny roles. Think Bad Boys, non-typical cops and think Men-in-Black.

I wonder what a Malaysian superhero would be like. Perhaps, a typical daddy who is fed up with the road bullies in KL and doing a 'Batman' and starts to "strike fear" to those who use fear on others. Perhaps, he will equip his "Black" car with the latest gadgetry like "oil slick", "spikes" and other "weapons" to destroy the many road bully's vehicles.

Yah.. but first.. he probably needs to get approval from JPJ etc for all the modification.

For more info on this movie - read here.

Facts not in the Main Stream Media

http://jonnybaker.blogs.com/photos/art_pics/santa8.jpg

Does the subsidy sound like a subsidy or does it sound like a penalty? This just seems to be a heavy increment in our daily cost of living as we are not only charged with high car taxes but also with a drastic increase in fuel price.

Car taxation is government profit, fuel sales is Petronas' (GLC) profit which also translates into government profit. The government may ridicule us Malaysians by saying look at the world market and fuel price worldwide.

We know the international rates are above the USD 130/barrel. We understand the fact that the fuel prices are increasing worldwide and we also know that major scientist are still contradicting on why this phenomenon is happening.

Again we go back to numbers to be more straight fwd 1 barrel = 159 liters x RM2.70/liter = RM 429 or USD 134

On 1 hand, we are paying the full cost of 1 barrel of crude oil with RM2.70 per liter but on the other hand the crude oil only produces 46% of fuel. Msia sells crude oil per barrel at USD130 buys back Fuel per barrel at USD134. And not forgetting, every barrel of fuel is produced with 2 barrels of crude oil.

1 barrel crude oil = produce 46% fuel (or half of crude oil), therefore 2 barrel crude oil = approximately 1 barrel fuel. In other words, each time we sell 2 barrels of crude oil, equivalently we will buy back 1 barrel of fuel.

Financially, Malaysia sell 2 barrel crude oil @ USD 130/barrel =USD 260 = RM 858
then, Malaysia will buy back fuel @ USD 134/barrel = RM 442/barrel

Thus, Malaysia earn net extra USD 126 = RM 416 for each 2 barrel of crude sold/exported vs imported 1 barrel of fuel !!! (USD 260-134 = USD 126 = RM416)

So where this extra USD 126/barrel income is channeled to by Malaysian Govt?

Misleading concept of Subsidy:
The word "subsidy" has been brandished by the BN government as if it has so generously helped the rakyat and in doing so incurred losses.

This simple example will help to explain the fallacy:

Example: Ahmad is a fisherman. He sells a fish to you at $10 which is below the market value of $15. Let's assume that he caught the fish from the abundance of the sea at little or no cost. Ahmad claims that since the market value of the fish is $15 and he sold you the fish for $10, he had subsidised you $5 and therefore made a loss of $5.

Question : Did Ahmad actually make a profit of $10 or loss of $5 which he claimed is the subsidy?

Answer: Ahmad makes a profit of $10 which is the difference of the selling price ($10) minus the cost price ($0 since the fish was caught from the abundance of the sea). There is no subsidy as claimed by Ahmad.

The BN government claims that it is a subsidy because the oil is kept and treated as somebody else's property (you know who). By right, the oil belongs to all citizens of the country and the government is a trustee for the citizens. So as in the above simple example, the BN government cannot claim that it has subsidised the citizen!

Nokia Killer is out!

This baby is going to be sold for less than RM700 a pop. It will make Nokia & SE cry. The present owners of the iPhone will also be cursing their luck. They bought theirs for more than RM1700.

Businessweek said:
Almost a year after upending the mobile-phone world with its first wireless handset, the iPhone, Apple unveiled a souped-up second version of the device, the iPhone 3G. Introduced by Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs in a June 9 keynote address in San Francisco, the iPhone 3G will sell for $199 for an 8GB version and $299 for a 16GB version. The new prices represent a departure from a year ago when the first devices sold for $599 on the upper end. The iPhone 3G will be available in 22 countries beginning July 11, and will eventually be sold in 70 countries in all.

The new phone derives its name from the faster Internet downloads available on advanced, or third-generation (3G), wireless networks. Jobs told the audience the new iPhone downloads Web pages as much as 36% faster than comparable phones from Nokia (NOK) and Palm (PALM). The new phone also sports a feature that lets users know their location using GPS satellites. Phones that run GPS technology are able to access an array of location-aware applications, including mapping within address books. Other improvements over the original device include improved audio quality on phone calls.

Do we need a Fuel Hike?

Malaysia = RM 2.70/litre

This chart is not shown by our national newspapers.

Is it really necessary for a oil exporting country like Malaysia to follow the market price or futures price of petrol? You tell me.

Free Cash for Bikes & Small Cars

MalaysiaKini announced that the Malaysian Government will give cash for motorcyclists, small-car owners as subsidy for the fuel hike - according to a source. Other information leaked out of the Cabinet meeting this morning:
  • Direct cash payments to motorcyclists and small-car owners when the price of petrol goes up. The payments are expected to be implemented through postal orders
  • No increase for LPG cooking gas and NGV for taxis
  • Gas subsidy to power industrial sector to be gradually reduced
  • Extra tax on independent power producers (IPPs) and palm oil millers
The decision of the cabinet, which met this morning, will be announced at 5pm at a press conference in Prime Minister’s Department.

Currently petrol sells for about RM1.92 a litre, among the cheapest in the region.

If petrol is to be sold at full market prices, it could be as high as almost RM4 a litre - about 100 percent above current levels.

A mother's undying love

Baby rescued from rubble.

There were so many touching stories from the Wen Chuan earthquake but this one stood out.

When rescuers found her, she was already dead, crushed by the collapsed house. Through gaps in the rubbles, they could see her posture. Kneeling on both knees, her entire upper body bent forward, held up by her two hands pressed against the ground, as if performing the ceremonial bow in an ancient ritual. Except, her body had been compressed out of shape and looked somewhat eerie.

With some effort, rescuers carefully removed the debris burying her, found her child lying beneath her, bundled in a little red blanket decorated with yellow flower prints. He was about 3-4 months old.

Shielded by his mother's body , he was totally unharmed, sleeping peacefully as he was brought out. His soundly asleep face warmed the hearts of all rescuers on the scene. As the rescue team's doctor unbundled the blanket to examine the baby, he discovered a mobile phone tucked into the blanket. He subconsciously looked at the display, found there was a SMS message.

"My Dear Baby, If you were to stay alive, you must remember that I love you."

No stranger to the pain and sorrow brought by death, the doctor nonetheless wept at this moment. The cell phone was passed around, every person who read the message wept.

David Cooked Archuleta

The much anticipated David vs David - ends this morning with the Rocker making a mockery of the '3 round defeat' yesterday according to Simon Cowell.

I always thought Chris Daughtry was suppose to be the Idol a few seasons ago and this time finally we have a rocker as an Idol. I guess lots of people finally recognised that it is fine being cute and have a great voice, but DC was miles ahead in terms of versatility and talent. DC certainly will sell more records and last longer than Little David in the very fickle Music industry.

That said, Little David would certainly have a marketable career in Music judging from his hysterical youth support base, so I wouldn't be too sad for him if I were you.

Soon to be a major motion picture

The Attack of the Giant Brassiere

I know men are obsessed about somethings they don't have, but the creator of this World's largest bra is beyond obsession to pure madness. Is he waiting for some ads for sponsorship?
Don't you think Hooters mights be the right people to approach.

Little John's verse

Little John gave us a mighty fright
His darkside loomed o'er the midnight
bewitching us with his spellbinding course
we lay in awe under the four legged cross.

'Here in My Home' by Malaysian Artistes for Unity

I heard over Hits.fm today about this noble project to celebrate Bangsa Malaysia and foster unity. I love the music and the video. This is a step in the right direction and right timing, especially when some politicians are stirring back 'outdated' racial sentiments. Here's to the NEW Malaysia, we all want to be part of!

Who is Malaysian Artistes For Unity is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit national unity project made possible by the participation of over 120 notable Malaysians. Enlisted to the project over a short period of two weeks in April 2008, these participants range from artistes, celebrities, arts activists, media-personalities, musicians, dancers, sportsmen, filmmakers, web designers, producers, technicians, poets, models and more.

All participants contributed their effort on a pro-bono basis. The project has a production budget of exactly zero.

What is its objective? The project seeks to celebrate cultural diversity and the ideal of Bangsa Malaysia through video and music. Its central message is one of racial unity. By being made freely available to the public, the project is also a gift from all the participants to the nation.

Declaring War to Save Myanmar

The sickening picture above makes me mourn. Being a father, I know how precious is my child to me. Each one of these kids are a son or daughter of a parent. It is too painful to imagine the agony of a loss of a child.

More than 12 days after the deadly Nargis tore apart Myanmar's 5 million inhabitants, hundreds of thousands are feared to be dead and the death toll according to estimates could reach 2.5 million in days to come if AID does not reach the survivors. People are literally dying of hunger and disease.

I wrote to my pals in an email a few days after the 3 May asking the question why aren't our local media pushing for donations and Asean pressuring the Myanmar Junta to open its borders for foreign help. It took more than 10 days and thousands of loss lives for our foreign ministers to just meet up to discuss. It took the same number of days for the local press to pay lip service to raising donations. Why not the same level of passion or compassion shown during the Tsunami disaster in Aceh? This disaster is going to be worst than Tsunami if the International community remains passive.

The Military Junta lead by greedy generals (who are apparently former monks!) have displayed to the world such disdain to human lives. They rather blocked aid and let the children die. One question their motive of going ahead with a referendum despite the disaster and their lack of initiative to quickly send troops out to help with the victims.

If there is a time for the UN to activate Chapter VII of their charter it is now.

Read this: for the case for intervention

And Time's: Is it Time to Invade Burma?

Do you think that in this instance, it would be justified for the UN to attack Myanmar to save it from its military regime?

Jaunty's weird history

French not only gave us hundreds of words, it sometimes gave us the same word more than once. A prime example is Old French gentil, "high-born, noble." In the early 1200s, this was borrowed into Middle English and spelled as gentile, which later developed to mean "having the character of a nobleman, courteous," and, by the 1500s, "soft, mild."

After some changes in spelling, the result was Modern English gentle. French gentil was borrowed again into English at the end of the 16th century, also in the spelling gentile and meaning "well-bred, belonging to or appropriate to the gentry." In the ensuing century it came also to mean "courteous, elegant," and continues to do so today as the word genteel.

Since the spelling gentile did not accurately represent the word's French pronunciation, in the 17th century some people wrote it jantee or janty. This word took on a life of its own: while it originally meant "well-bred," by the 1670s it meant "easy or unconcerned in manner," and thence "spritely, lively, brisk." Thus was born jaunty.

The French gentil that spawned these words comes from Latin gentilis, which meant simply "belonging to (the same) gens or family." It is from the original Latin meaning that we get the modern word gentile, borrowed in the 14th century (again through French) meaning, essentially, "belonging to the same family as all non-Jews."

A life snatched away

This is what happened on Friday afternoon, when this girl was crossing the road to work as a part time salesgirl after school.
While crossing the road a motorbike came from behind and the pillion use a helmet and hit on the head while the motorbike was moving. The girl died on the spot. She was only 18 years old.

We can't fathom the depth of pain her father or mother is feeling now. And yet would the murderer will ever be caught? The task of making our country safe is not over just because he had some changes in the political arena. We need to continue pushing for changes so that our country can be a safer place.

The Day Kuala Lumpur Froze

Imagine being in a mall full of people and suddenly 1000 people just froze! Science fiction?
Read Malaysian Insider's scope on this event.
"At 3.35pm yesterday, a small but highly trafficked section of Kuala Lumpur came to a screeching freeze. The phenomenon occurred at the Pavilion mall in Jalan Bukit Bintang and lasted approximately 5 minutes.A fashion show at the mall's ground floor atrium had just concluded when suddenly, an estimated 1,000 people who had gathered to watch the show ceased to move, sending the rest into confusion. The mall's patrolling security guards were equally bewildered by the sudden non-movement and were observed to be at a loss on what to do. They kept running back and forth and speaking into their walkie-talkies but made no move to question any of the petrified crowd."
No, time did not stand still.

A participant said: “The idea behind the event is that it's not a political statement but a
social statement, that people of different ethnicities, different
classes across a wide section of society could get together to do this
.
After the event, there were random groups of people coming up to you
and talking to you. There was a sense of camaraderie, that cheer of
support; even though what we did was nothing but freeze, we did it
together!”

With Malaysians like these its not surprising then that we had our political tsunami.

Crime Alert: Another Car Jacking

Recently I received an email (story has been confirmed) of another car-jacking in KL, this time at OUG Plaza. The owner of a silver Chevrolet Optra5 (i almost bought this baby) similar to the pic above with registration WQB3200 have this tale of woe:

Hi, my name is Fuankee, Ryan. On 16th March 2008 I was in my car (Silver Chevrolet Optra5, with the engine running, windows up, and doors locked) with a friend of mine parked right outside of Plaza OUG at 11pm when a champagne color Perodua Kelisa stop next to my car. A malay man with mustache walked out from the passenger side of the kelisa, probably aging around his late 20s walked up to my side of the car, knocked the window and asked for our IDs. I was fooled by his appearance as a plain coat police, as I personally did encounter with a few before, and winded down the window slightly, only a couple of inches down, but out of my expectation, he reached his right hand for my car lock's knob very swiftly, and within seconds,he had already opened my car door.

Out of nowhere, another guy came and pulled my key off the ignition. At the same time, another two guys (one indian, one malay) had already reached the passenger door, asking my friend (a girl) to get off the car as well. Calmly, she asked, "Where's your police ID or even a search warrant?" Instantly, he threatened to get her off by saying, "saya ada pistol,(i have a gun)" and pointed a gun at my friend. The fake policeman grabbed me by my arm, dragged me out of the car and pushed me against the car. I asked for his police ID as well, but he pulled out a 2ft length rusted 'parang' from his black jacket, threatening me by directing the 'parang' right at my face instead.

He forced me to get on the floor and body searched me for valuables. At that very moment, I had nothing with me as all my belongings as in wallet, watch and handphone were all inside the car. I was so close to believing that it would be my last night, afraid that they would get all angry, finding nothing valuable with me.

P.S, It's reported that robbers even force children to knock at your car windows and claim that they're lost. DO NOT wind your windows down to help them cos as soon as you do, these robbers will do the same like they did to me. Just report the lost kid to the police with your windows up.

Pleaes contact Fuankee at 012-2036109 if you sighted the Chevy.

For Couples: The Secret

A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years.

They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other except that the little old woman had a shoebox in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about.

For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one day the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would not recover. In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box and took it to his wife's bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box.

When he opened it, he found two crocheted dolls and a stack of money totaling $95,000. He asked her about the contents. 'When we were to be married,' she said, 'my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doll.'

The little old man was so moved; he had to fight back tears. Only two precious dolls were in the box. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with happiness. 'Honey,' he said, 'that explains the doll, but what about all of this money? Where did it come from?'

'Oh,' she said, 'that's the money I made from selling the dolls.'

A Prayer......

Dear Lord,
I pray for Wisdom to understand my man,
love to forgive him, and patience for his moods;
because Lord, if I pray for strength,
I'll beat him to death, because I don't know how to crochet!

Care for some plastic coated snacks?

Read this and be warned. Malaysia boleh!

I have a funny feeling that some of our hawkers in JB are so fed up with Singaporeans increasing the prices of goods, that they have come up with this to poison our lovely neighbours.

Don't be too shocked if I tell you that some of our KL & Penang hawkers may be using plastic too, since the price of floor has gone up.

Spy Shot: Is this the new Proton MPV?

Is this for real? Looks really good - almost like the new Stream.

Spy Shot captured on the East-West Highway by CarStudio.

If it will drives as well as the Honda Stream & costs half of a Stream, then I wont be surprise that this would turn out to be a best seller.

After a string of hits from Proton, I really hope they continue their good showing with an MPV like this by the end of this year.

Perhaps a new engine to boot? Like a Campro 1.8 CPS or dare I suggest a 2.0 TDI Diesel from Mitsubishi? Say good bye to Granny Livina soon!

Essential Motoring 101 has this to say.

My say would be that Proton should offer a Campro 1.8L diesel engine, besides the usual petrol motor. Of course, the CPS (Cam Profiling System) and perhaps the VIM (Variable Intake Manifold) would not be a question at all when the MPV arrives.

How harmful is our Cellphones?

Image:Cellphone head sar 1.png
It's in your head, in your head, zombie zombie... (remember Cranberries?)

Every now and then, I get an email from a friend or my wife detailing horror tales of supposed harmful effects of cellphones on our brain, kidney, sex organs, and even a child. Such as this story:-

"This morning I heard a sad real story from my colleague. She told me one of her friend always miscarriage when the baby 2-3 months old for few times continuously in few years time. The couple went to check with many doctors and lastly one of the doctor check on the death baby and found out the baby's body cells keeping die when baby growing up until he/she cannot be survived.

This is because her uterus has been affected by HANDPHONE radiotion. The doctor told she has no chance to get baby no matter how because the radiotion affected her uterus which the major portion of her uterus cells already death, cannot carry healthy baby. All this because of she has been keeping her handphone in her working jacket which the position just right to the uterus position for few years time. Please beware and take note the consequences is not worth."
Usually people take heed to these warnings to play safe. But are these claims old-wives tales (Urban legends) or are they for real?

The best place to check whether some tales are true or not is Snopes.com. You will find many of the emails you received about dangers Coke, Margarine and some health warnings to be nothing more than jokes. Remember the one about not using your mobile phone in Petrol Station? Read this to know the truth.

Anyway, there is no article on the harmful effects of cellphones in Snopes - so I did some snooping around elsewhere. And found this two useful sites: Howstuffworks and CNet's Quick Guide on Radiation Levels.

Chart for the radiation levels of different devices.
OMG! Cellphone is a microwave!(I can hear my wife panicking)

All electromagnetic energy falls somewhere on the electromagnetic spectrum, which ranges from extremely low frequency (ELF) radiation to X-rays and gamma rays. Read this article to know the levels of radiation affect biological tissue.

In short, after reading all this stuff and Wikipedia, the jury is still out on the question whether cellphones have any long term effects on our brain cells, kidney or sex organ. There is no conclusive proof that it is harmful to us.

All I know is that if you are one of those who keep buying a new cellphone every time a new model is out, then your brains must have been fried for sure.

Why do we need so many ministers in the PM Department?

So that he can continue to do this....ZZZ ... ZZZ .... (he is old and tired)

Latest - PRIME MINISTER'S DEPARTMENT

Minister : Tan Sri Bernard Dompok
Minister : Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz
Minister : Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi
Minister : Datuk Zaid Ibrahim (senator)
Minister : Datuk Amirsham A Aziz (senator)
Deputy : Datuk Johari Baharum
Deputy : Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim (senator)
Deputy : S K Devamany
Deputy : Datuk Hasan Malek

As a student of management, I learned that the easiest way to work less is to delegate more. And the easiest way to not work at all is to have many assistant managers (mid-level management). Our PM must be a really good student of mis-management.

Why do we need so many ministers in the PM Department? So that our PM can continue to to travel around the world with his USD 50million private Jet. Read this

The Queen of Parliament dethroned today

Latest: The longest-serving Cabinet minister in Malaysia, and perhaps the longest serving trade minister in the world, has been dropped. Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz, the former Trade and Industry minister, a position she has held for just over 20 years, since 1987, was dropped from the 12th Malaysian Cabinet announced today at noon by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi.

Rafidah Aziz known for her imperial record of hardly ever present in Parliament. She hardly ever attends Parliament more than 5 times a year. And she is a minister for 20 years! I am sure she wont be missing Parliament, but she might be missing dishing out APs.

Wikipedia has only this to say about our minister of 20 years. No achievements listed, nothing!
In 2006, she was accused of corruption related to the issuance of
Approved Permits (AP) for importing foreign vehicles, by former prime
minister Mahathir bin Mohamad in his series of criticisms against the government.
A few familiar names were revealed, close associates and buddies and AP made them instant millionaires without adding any value. Malaysians were inflamed, the press at that time was on a witch-hunt and all of a sudden nothing happened.

Because "Semuanya okay" according to Pak lah. Maybe the "hug" has something to do with it.

One area Malaysians are better than Singaporeans

... it is GUTS.

While Malaysians showed up in great numbers (over 40,000) in our protest rally on the 10th November 2007, only a handful of Singaporeans showed up last weekend in their "Tak Boleh Tahan" rally. And these includes kids!

The handful of brave Singaporeans who protested. Stand up, stand up for Singapore?

As mentioned previously, SDP organised a protest rally on Saturday. But only a few turned up in RED while everyone else in Singapore is busy shopping. I guess either the majority aren't feeling the injustice or are just too apathetic to bother showing up.

If that is the state of democracy in Singapore (judging by the numbers), then I think Malaysians are so much more ahead of Singapore in this area.

The Most Wanted Face

This is Kirsten aka Ashley Alexander Dupre (pictures & interview here & Kirsten's Myspace page)

The face (and name) millions of Americans are searching for.
Why? A New York Governor (Eliot Spitzer) resigned amidst revealing details of his sex scandal with the Emperors Club VIP. And guess what, he won the governorship for being known as "Mr Clean". According to the Sun, "The married dad — who made his name prosecuting prostitution rings — stood down after the FBI caught him hiring a £2,000-an-hour tart. He had spent over £40,000 over the last 10 years on high class prostitutes".

Remember someone else in Malaysia who is called "Mr Clean" too?

According to Wikipedia:
The Emperors Club VIP was an alleged prostitution ring based in New York. Suspicious money transfers to these accounts by Eliot Spitzer, governor of New York State, prompted a federal investigation of Emperors Club VIP leading to its demise in March 2008. In its heyday, the Emperors Club VIP was an international escort agency that solicited wealthy male clients via a web site that rated its women on a Seven diamond scale from three to seven diamonds (and charged accordingly). As of March 11, 2008, the Emperors Club VIP website, emperorsclubvip.com, has been shut down. The ring had 50 call girls available for appointments in New York, Washington, Miami, London and Paris, according to a complaint unsealed in Federal District Court in Manhattan. The appointments, made by telephone or through an online booking service, cost between $1,000 and $5,500 per hour and could be paid by cash, credit cards, wire transfers or money orders. A woman who was top-rated (seven diamonds) could cost as much as $31,000 per day.
Unbelievable as it must be, I really wonder if there are also similar "Raja Club" here. I wonder whether some escort will show up and tell a similar story here like Kirsten did. And I wonder which politician will be under the spotlight.

Which politician do you think would be exposed if a similar "Emperor Club" is busted?

Interesting read: NY Times interview with Kirsten and The Smoking Gun's expose
Latest: News from UK, "SHAMED New York Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned last night amid claims he spent more than £40,000 on high-class hookers over TEN YEARS."

Singapore also 'Tak Boleh Tahan'

Apparently our Singapore brothers are also fed up with the ruling party PAP. And SDP is organising a Protest Rally - asking everyone to wear RED.

Pseudonymity said:

"Our elderly poor continue to break their backs just to eke out a miserable existence. Many cannot even afford three square meals, some even having to live off scraps on hawker centre tables.

The PAP's young, arrogant, and heartless ministers then tell them that they should forget about retiring.

What about our workers? They are made to work harder and longer, and for less pay. Many of them have to sign contracts that don't allow medical leave, no bonuses, and demand 72-hour-work weeks.

They have no unions to speak for them as the NTUC is headed by a PAP minister. The problem is worsened by the indiscriminate taking in of foreign workers to compete with Singaporeans to suppress wages."

Despite all of this, the ministers brazenly help themselves to an 85 percent increase in salaries last year with the prime minister paying himself more than $300,000 a month!

The PAP is like a grotesque monkey on our backs, keeping Singaporeans bent and strangulated.
"

Sounds like a wave of unrest may rise from the south in Singapore. They have different issues from us, yet there is a sense that the majority are now fed up with Political Elitism, just like us.

When a government holds on to power for too long, like in Malaysia, it ends up self-serving and oppressive.

I suppose SDP is hoping that many Singaporeans will paint the city RED, just like we painted the streets of KL Yellow on 10 November.

As much as they are "Kiasu" (unwilling to lose) I hope they are not "Kiasi" (afraid to die). If their Kiasi-ness is greater than their yearning for change then, sorry-lah not many will show up in RED.

The Aftermath: Hitman targets BR MPs?

Barisan Rakyat MPs: Beware of Hired Guns!

Today's news:
KLANG: DAP strongman and Sungai Pinang assemblyman Teng Chang Khim had a near miss yesterday when a four-wheel-drive vehicle nearly rammed into him in Lorong Tingkat near here yesterday.
Mr Shadow Fox has been sniffing around and this is his warning.
My advice to opposition MPs is to be on the alert at all times and be careful because history has shown that these gangsters would not bat an eyelid to kill even MCA datuks and YBs, much less opposition party candidates.

The Aftermath: The End of KJ

Khairy Jamaluddin - On his way out?

Latest from the Malaysian Insider (which incidentally was inaccessible for the last 3 days), is KJ is on his way out.

I guess most of us would be delighted with this news and most likely to agree that He is the most hated (after Samy Velu) person in Malaysian Politics.

Just read this description of him:
Arrogant. A Racist. A Crony. The epitome of what’s wrong with Malaysian politics. A Malay ultra. The power behind the throne. Too ambitious. Too cocky. Too much in a hurry. Too interfering. Too young. The hidden hand behind the missteps and colossal collapse of Barisan Nasional at the election.

Add all of these together and you still would not complete the list of how Malaysians perceive Khairy Jamaludin, the deputy chief of Umno Youth, MP for Rembau and the son-in-law of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Remember Proverbs 10:3 "The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked."
